Year 5

English:

Our Power of Reading text is The Highwayman, by Alfred Noyes. This classic poem, tells the story ill-fated love story between a highwayman and Bess, the landlord’s daughter. We will be exploring the language used and using those techniques to deepen our own knowledge using inference and prediction. Our written outcomes will include description of setting, Haiku poetry,  narrative and information text. In our build up to our big writes, we will be exploring grammatical  technics such as, use of 1st person, modal verbs and subordination.

 

 
Maths:
 Multiplication & Division – to include formal written methods for multiplication and division of numbers up to 4 digits. Fractions – to include proper & improper fractions, mixed numbers, converting between mixed numbers, adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.
Home Learning Expectations
 
We try to keep this to a minimum at Dale Hall, believing time spent with family and joining in with other activities is equally important.
 
However, it is essential that children do engage with what is set, especially given the extended period of learning these pupils missed over recent years.
 
TTRockstars - Daily for just 5 minutes playing time (little and often is the key to mastery).  To help you monitor your child's playing time a target of 25 minutes for the week has been set which will decrease as they play.
 
Reading - We encourage pupils to read a wide range of texts for pleasure at home, whatever these may be. The home learning expectation is that 30 minutes of reading is completed 3 times a week (or similar amount over several days) - this, of course, doesn't mean that lots more shouldn't be done. Even if your child is a confident reader please continue to discuss their reading with them.
 
Spelling - Spelling Shed activities. 10 minutes, 3 times a week.

Miss Laura Bailey

Panthers class teacher / History lead

I'm delighted to be working in year 5 as the Panther's class teacher. We are lucky enough to be starting our year 5 journey with the Tudors - Which I love! I aim to encourage the class to be as enthusiastic as I am about the subject by using interactive learning techniques and allowing them to guide their own learning. I can't wait to see where they take us!
Throughout year 5, my aim is to nurture independence, a love of learning and fun!

Key Stage 2 and Maths Lead, Tigers Class Teacher

As most of you know I have been teaching at Dale Hall for over 20 years now - I can't imagine teaching anywhere else, it is such a wonderful school and our pupils are clearly the best around! I really enjoy teaching in Year 5, it has such a fun and interesting curriculum. I am also looking forward to working again with many of the children I had got to know a little back in Year 3 and to see the progress they have made.

Tigers Class Teacher and Teaching and Learning Lead

I am delighted to be returning to Year 5 this year and cannot wait to get stuck in to all of the amazing learning we will be undertaking. We often see a huge transformation in the children's desire to be independent learners in Year 5 and it is a huge passion of mine to nurture this and to equip them with the learning skills they need to reach their full potential in this way. I will be working as Tigers class teacher on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and look forward to all this year has to bring!

Our Teaching Assistants in Year 5 this year are Mrs Ward and Mrs Wells. Our SEN support assistant is Mrs Gowers.

Diversity in our curriculum
 
In year 5 been working hard to redesign and develop our wider curriculum to be as representative of the world as we can. We want lessons that celebrate diversity and promote acceptance and respect. We want a curriculum that allows our children to regularly learn about, and be inspired by, individuals of all abilities from all backgrounds, cultures, genders, sexualities, religions and ethnicities. It is really important for us as a school, that the celebration of differences is embedded in our lessons and discussed frequently at every opportunity possible throughout the year. Weaving diversity throughout our curriculum is an on-going project and something we all feel incredibly passionate about.
